200 Tonnes of Bamboo: Will Making Biochar Earn You Carbon Credits?

A farmer rang us with 200 tonnes of bamboo and a plan to turn it into biochar. Biochar does earn real carbon credits — unlike stubble — and they sell for roughly ten times the price. But 200 tonnes, once, is the wrong shape of supply. Here is the honest arithmetic, in plain language.

If I make biochar from 200 tonnes of bamboo, will I earn carbon credits?

Yes, biochar earns genuine carbon credits — real ones, sold at real prices, and far better prices than anything else on a farm. This is not like stubble, where the honest answer is "almost nothing".

But 200 tonnes, one time, is too small to register on your own. That much bamboo makes roughly 30 to 45 credits, worth around ₹4 lakh. The registry's minimum fee to issue them is about ₹13 lakh. You would pay three times the value of what you are selling.

The better money is the biochar itself. Twenty tonnes of biochar sells for ₹3 to ₹8 lakh with no registry, no auditor and no laboratory. Sell the char first. Chase the carbon credit only by supplying somebody else's already-registered project.

What is biochar, in plain words?

Biochar is charcoal, made properly, and put into the soil instead of burnt as fuel.

You heat wood or bamboo in a closed container where almost no air can reach it. Without air it cannot catch fire and turn to ash. Instead it slowly cooks, the smoke and gas escape, and what stays behind is black, light, dry and full of tiny holes. That is biochar.

The old word for this is koyla, or charcoal. The difference is only what you do with it. Burn it in a stove and the carbon goes straight back into the sky. Bury it in your field and it just sits there — for hundreds of years.

Why does biochar pay when not burning stubble pays nothing?

We have written elsewhere that not burning your stubble earns you almost no carbon money. Farmers often find that hard to accept. So it is worth explaining why biochar is genuinely different.

Think about where the carbon ends up.

  • Bamboo left to rot: insects and fungus eat it, and within a few years the carbon is back in the air. Nothing saved.
  • Bamboo burnt in the open: the carbon is back in the air within minutes, along with a great deal of smoke. Nothing saved.
  • Bamboo made into biochar: roughly half the carbon is locked into a solid black form that neither rots nor dissolves. Put it in the ground and it stays put for centuries.

That last one is what buyers call removal — carbon actually taken out of the air and stored. It is rare, it is measurable, and companies pay a lot for it. This is why biochar credits fetch a much higher price than credits for changing a farming practice.

₹10,000 – ₹12,500
Roughly what one biochar carbon credit sells for today — close to ten times what a farm-practice credit fetches. One credit = one tonne of carbon dioxide kept out of the sky. Prices move, Indian credits sell at a discount to European ones, and this is before anybody's costs and share come out.

First, a question back: is your 200 tonnes green or dry?

This is not a technicality. It changes the answer by half.

Freshly cut bamboo is around 60% water by weight. If you weighed 200 tonnes at the clump, straight after cutting, then more than half of what you weighed was water — and water makes no biochar.

If your 200 tonnes was weighed after months of air drying, you have roughly twice as much real material.

So before anything else: find out which one you have. Most farmers mean the first.

What 200 tonnes of bamboo actually becomes

Here is the sum, step by step, so you can follow it yourself rather than take anyone's word for it.

Rough working, not a quotation. Yields change with the bamboo species, the kiln and how dry the material is. Every figure is a mid-range estimate — your real result could be a third lower or a third higher.

Those figures look encouraging. Now comes the part nobody puts in the brochure.

The paperwork costs more than the credits are worth

Carbon credits do not exist because you did something good. They exist because a registry — an international body that keeps the official record — inspected your operation, checked your measurements and issued them. That inspection is not free, and the fee does not shrink just because your project is small.

About ₹13 lakh
The flat fee the main biochar registry charges to issue any batch below 1,000 credits. Your 200 tonnes would produce 30 to 45 of them.

Read those two numbers together. Around ₹4 lakh of credits. Around ₹13 lakh to have them issued. And that is before the annual platform charge, the laboratory tests, the monitoring records, the consultant and the kiln itself.

Even the dry-bamboo case — 70 to 90 credits, about ₹10 lakh — does not clear the fee.

If anyone tells you they will register a carbon project for your one-time 200 tonnes, they either do not know the fee structure or they are planning to charge you for the privilege.

A genuine project pays you. It never asks a farmer for registration money.

How big does a project have to be?

The fee drops sharply once you cross 1,000 credits in a single issue. That threshold is the real floor of this business.

About 5,300 tonnes
Green bamboo you would need to process every year — not once — for a carbon project of your own to begin making sense. That is roughly 26 times your 200 tonnes, repeated annually, for years.

Note the words every year. Registries do not certify a heap of bamboo. They certify a working facility, with a production record, a monitoring plan and an inspection every year. A single harvest is not a facility, however large it is.

This is the same wall that stops most small carbon projects in India, and it is the honest reason so many farmers who signed up have never been paid.

So what should you actually do with 200 tonnes?

Three routes. Only one of them is nonsense.

That third route is real, and it is growing. The registries specifically allow a company to register a project and take biochar from many small producers, and there are now rules written for exactly this — networks of small units each producing under 500 tonnes of biochar a year. India already has registered biochar projects operating this way.

Your job in that arrangement is not to become a carbon expert. It is to produce good, consistent, well-documented biochar, and to read the contract carefully.

Sell the char first. Prove you can make it consistently, keep records from day one, and let the carbon payment come later as a bonus if it comes at all.

Judge the kiln on whether the biochar sale pays for it. If the answer is no, no carbon credit is going to rescue it.

The kiln decides everything

This is where most small producers fall out, and it is worth understanding before you spend money.

A registry will accept almost any kind of kiln, on one condition: the char has to pass a laboratory test proving it will really last. But there is a second problem that catches simple kilns.

When biomass is cooked with a poor air supply, some of the gas that comes off is methane — a gas many times more damaging than carbon dioxide. Too much of it and the whole batch is disqualified, because you released more harm than you stored.

  • Open pit burning, or a hole in the ground: never qualifies. Not under any standard.
  • Simple batch kilns and open flame-curtain types: allowed in principle, but you must pay an accredited laboratory to measure the methane coming off your kiln. That testing is expensive, and it is a real barrier.
  • Closed retort kilns and continuous industrial units: these can use standard assumed values instead of paying for measurement. Much cheaper in paperwork terms, much more expensive to buy.

Dry your bamboo before you burn it. Wet material produces up to ten times more methane than dry material. It also gives you less biochar for the same effort.

Getting your bamboo below about 15% moisture is the single cheapest thing you can do, and it decides both how much you make and whether it qualifies at all. It costs you nothing but time and stacking space.

The trap nobody mentions: good bamboo may not qualify

This one surprises people, and it matters more than the fees.

The registries are trying to reward turning waste into stored carbon. They are not trying to reward destroying something useful. So there is a rule that good, sellable material cannot be fed into a carbon project — if your bamboo could have been sold for scaffolding, furniture, ply, board or agarbatti sticks, burning it into char is treated as waste of a resource, not a climate benefit.

The eligible material is usually the part you cannot sell: tops, branches, damaged and immature culms, and offcuts from a processing unit.

Straight, mature, sellable culms are worth far more sold as bamboo than converted to char. Check the market price for your species before you light anything.

There is a second catch in the same family. If making and selling biochar already pays for itself comfortably, a registry can refuse the credits on the grounds that you would have done it anyway — the same "you only get paid for something extra" rule that governs this whole business. It is an awkward rule, and an honest advisor will tell you about it up front.

Bamboo, permits and your land

One piece of genuinely good news. Since the law was amended in 2017, bamboo grown on non-forest land is no longer treated as a tree. You do not need felling or transit permission for it.

Two conditions, and both matter:

  • Your land must be recorded as non-forest land in the revenue records. The whole exemption rests on this.
  • Bamboo grown on forest land is still a tree, and still restricted.

Also check your own state. Transit rules are administered by state forest departments, and several states kept or brought back their own pass requirements, particularly for movement across state borders. Ask your district forest office rather than relying on the central position alone.

India's official national bamboo yield is only 1 to 3 tonnes per hectare per year. Well-managed commercial plantations claim far more, but those higher figures usually come from people selling planting material, so treat them carefully.

Either way, ask how much land your 200 tonnes came from. It tells you quickly whether this is a one-time clearing or a supply you can repeat — and that distinction decides everything above.

What to check before you sign anything

If somebody approaches you offering carbon money for your bamboo or your biochar, these are the questions. Get the answers on paper.

  1. Which registry, and what is the project number? Every genuine project is publicly listed. No number you can check yourself, no deal.
  2. Who owns the credits — you or me? Whoever signs as the supplier owns them. If you sign only as a feedstock seller, the carbon is theirs, not yours.
  3. What is my share, per tonne of biochar, and when am I paid? A real answer has a number and a date. "Depends on the market" is not an answer.
  4. Am I paying anything up front? If yes, walk away. At your volume the fees can never be recovered, so anyone charging you knows the project will not pay.
  5. Who carries the risk if the credits cannot be sold abroad? Government approval for international transfer of Indian credits is still unsettled. The contract should say who bears that.

Two more warnings specific to biochar deals. Be careful of anyone quoting you ₹250 to ₹360 per kilo for biochar — those are branded retail packet prices for gardeners, not what a truckload fetches. And be careful of anyone quoting international credit prices without mentioning that Indian credits sell at a discount.

Your biochar buyer must be told in writing that the carbon removal has already been claimed, and they cannot advertise their own product as carbon-negative on the strength of your char. What kind of kiln do I need for biochar carbon credits?

Do I need permission to cut and transport bamboo in India?

Not if it is grown on non-forest land. The Indian Forest Act was amended in 2017 to remove bamboo from the definition of a tree, so bamboo grown outside forest areas needs no felling or transit permit. Two conditions apply and both matter. First, your land must be recorded as non-forest land in the revenue records, because the whole exemption rests on that classification. Second, bamboo grown on forest land is still treated as a tree and remains restricted. Transit rules are also administered by state forest departments, and several states have kept or reintroduced their own pass requirements, especially for movement across state borders, so check with your district forest office rather than relying only on the central position.

What is bulk biochar actually worth in India?

Realistically ₹15 to ₹40 per kilogram sold in bulk at the farm gate, which puts 20 tonnes of biochar at roughly ₹3 to ₹8 lakh. Be careful of the much higher figures quoted online. Prices of ₹250 to ₹360 per kilogram are branded retail packets sold to home gardeners in one and five kilogram bags, and they are not achievable for anyone selling by the truckload. That gap between the retail price and the bulk price is where farmers are most often misled about what a biochar operation will earn. Notably, the bulk value of the char is usually as much as or more than the carbon credit is worth, and it requires no registry, auditor or laboratory.
